Morgan had to force herself out of bed the next morning, not wanting to let her client down. She showered, wincing as the hot water hit her swollen, purple hipbone. Her bloodshot eyes were puffy, with dark rings, a complete contrast to the rest of her face, pale from lack of sleep. The red marks on her wrists that Joe’s tight grip had left were tender to touch. Her eyes welled with tears as she did her best to block the memories of the previous night from her mind.

She managed to get through the training session by focusing a hundred percent on Lucy, her client, and nothing else. She did her best to smile and laugh and keep the session as normal as possible. Lucy was a triathlete who liked to have a session once a week in the gym with Morgan who would push her harder than she’d typically push herself. She’d given Morgan her usual hug at the end of the session, told her she was fantastic and headed out of the gym ready to run the twelve miles home.

Morgan found herself pacing her living room once she returned from the session, unsure what she should do with herself. She needed to call Elise and apologize for the night before. Her phone was full of missed calls and text messages from her friend. She’d switched her phone off after the strange call from Pip.

Morgan stopped pacing and sat on the couch. She only vaguely remembered the phone ringing twice shortly after Joe had stormed out of the apartment. She wasn’t sure why she’d picked it up. Now she realized she’d talked to Pip. She couldn’t remember why she’d rung. She remembered Pip mentioning extra training sessions but she’d never actually said why she was calling. Morgan picked up her phone and scrolled through the call history. Two calls around seven the previous night, both from a private number. She guessed she could call Riley and get Pip’s number to find out why Pip had called. Maybe she called about the Canyon trip?

Her phone pinged with the sound of an email arriving. She opened her mail to discover the email Doug had promised her. She read over it, glad of the distraction. She smiled when she got to Doug’s final comments, a list of bullet points he clearly stated were to convince her to take up the opportunity. She would love to work with him.

On a trip Morgan and Doug had taken to the Grand Canyon to celebrate her twenty-first, a celebration done their style, Morgan had suggested the idea for a company that took small groups on treks through the Canyon. Other companies were doing it, but Morgan’s idea was to work with trainers in San Francisco and other places to get their clients ready for the experience. Once they arrived at the Canyon, Doug would act as their tour guide. Doug had leaped at the idea with Morgan and MeFit being the first business he partnered with.
